Bakersfield is located about 115 miles from Los Angeles International Airport, and about 280 miles from San Francisco. Getting to Bakersfield is probably easiest by car from one of these cities, but there is also direct airline service to Bakersfield (BFL) from LAX and SFO on a number of carriers, including American Eagle, United, and America West.

Bakersfield

Bakersfield is a rapidly growing city with very affordable housing and standard of living.  The current population of Bakersfield is approximately 300,000 and that of Kern County is approximately 700,000.  Crude oil and agriculture are the main industries of the Bakersfield area and of Kern County.  The following are some websites which will give you a little more information about Bakersfield.

General Directions:

From the South, take Highway 405 north, or Highway 5 north.  405 will eventually merge with 5 north.  Take 5 north over the mountain and into the central valley region.  The road will turn into 99 north (Highway 5 will branch off, do not continue on highway 5).  Take 99 north for another 20 miles into Bakersfield.  You have two options.  The first one is to take Rte 58 east exit.  Stay on Rte 58  and exit on Mt. Vernon.   Turn left (north) for another 1.5 mile and turn left onto Flower St.  Park at the general parking area on the right.  The parking lot to the west of the hospital is preferable.  This is not the most scenic route.  We recommend that you take the second option.  Stay on 99 north and past the Rte 58 exit.  Then exit on 178 East.  You will drive through downtown Bakersfield.  Stay on the same road and eventually, it turns into a freeway (178 east).  Take the freeway to Mt. Vernon and make a right turn (south).  Turn right on Flower St. and park at the general parking area on the west side of the hospital.  There will be a clinic entrance with automatic glass doors where you enter.  Continue past registration and turn left at the end of the hall.  You will see an elevator on your right.  Take this elevator up to the 2nd floor and turn right.  The Department of Surgery is directly ahead.

From the North, take Rte 99 South, exit at Rte 204 south. Take 204 through the northern park of downtown and go through three lights, then get on freeway 178 heading east. Exit at Mt Vernon Avenue, make a right turn and go to Flower Street and turn right to KMC as above.  Another option is to stay on 99 South and exit 178 East.  Go through downtown Bakersfield as above and continue on 178 East until Mt. Vernon, turn right (south) and continue until Flower St.  Then turn right to the parking area of KMC.

From San Francisco, take I5 South to 46 east to 99 south and proceed as above or take Rte 58, then go east on 58 into Bakersfield.
